Curve Gallery presents a new series of paintings by highly respected Newcastle artist Jane Lander. The sea is such a force in the Newcastle sensibility and Lander has captured all its drama and atmosphere whilst expressing the familiarity of our relationship to the coast. SEA reveals both the serenity and rage of our oceans, whilst investigating the cinematic experience that contemplation of the sea can evoke. Lander asks those philosophical questions that only nature can inspire. “Where have you come from, what stories do you bring to these shores?”

Jane Lander has an established practice of more than 30 years, working in painting, drawing, animation and printmaking. Her work is held in many collections including the Newcastle Art Gallery, Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, Maitland Art Gallery, Muswellbrook Art Gallery and Broken Hill Art Gallery. Lander has been a finalist in many national prizes including The Dobell Drawing Prize, The Blake Travelling Art Prize, The NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting prize and The Kilgour Art Prize, now held annually at Newcastle Art Gallery. She was the recipient of The Windmill Trust Scholarship in 2010 and has been awarded numerous art prizes that include winning The Broken Hill Art Prize twice.

SEA is Lander’s second solo exhibition with Curve Gallery and in her long career has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Newcastle.
