Luke Beezley
Precious Little

Boxes oozing resin, coal and barking mad heads with red tongues are all forms that inhabit this body of sculpture  by Luke Beezley. Luke’s work echo’s the Newcastle environment as we see gantries rise from boxes or embedded in pieces of coal. All appears ship shape as timbered forms perch on boxes nowhere near the sea. The work is a response to a passing comment, something overheard on a train, a quick chat during smoko, a single sentence of social conscience that interprets a world issue. The piece ‘Dyslexic Dog’ with its jaw of flaming and boxed body conjures up some prehistoric cur that questions how individuals interpret religion.
The language of propaganda is addressed in the work ‘Containment’ – how the newspeak of governments verbally manoeuvre around the issue. Beside the social comment lies the comic and sedate as these sculptures play with recognisable forms from organic materials. Humour prevails in these precious little pieces that suggest more than they’re letting on.
