Shelley came from humble beginnings and has a large family of her own, so the opportunity to find her creative side and that ‘thing’ that was undiscovered, but always there, is recent. Her artistic journey has begun and she recently completed her fine arts course in Newcastle.
Shelley describes herself as a ‘watcher and listener’ and her observations are revealed through painting and sculpture. She is inspired by those everyday moments when people are both encountered and experienced, and explores these narratives through her artistic practice
As Shelley finds her voice and pushes out of the safe zones and reaches for an emotional understanding of her encountered subjects, the faces, posture and eyes reveal their stories.
Shelly has exhibited both locally in Newcastle and throughout the Hunter Region. She was recently awarded a highly commended prize at NEAP (Newcastle Emerging Artists Prize) with her painting, titled, ‘Old Man Rabbit Loves His Carrots’ (2012).
“I can see my own style evolving. I like to push myself out of my safe zones and just keep reaching.
I have found my addiction and I’m amazed at how I can love it more each day and consider myself forever a student of art.”
