PIOPIOTAHI by JANE LANDER opening 6pm Friday 13th Sept
EXHIBITION: September 14 – October 19
Curve Gallery is proud to announce an exhibition of new work by Jane Lander, her third solo exhibition with the gallery and almost two years since her last solo exhibition, SEA.
Piopiotahi (Milford Sound) features an immersive installation of painting, having its origins in the primordial landscapes of the South Island of New Zealand. This extensive body of work sees the artist as witness to this most revered and recognisable New Zealand icon.
Piopiotahi offers the viewer a powerful cinematic experience of epic proportions and everyday tourists pilgrimage to this awe-inspiring landscape. It is this ‘pilgrimage’ that Lander wants us to contemplate: the icon straining under the sheer weight of its own vulnerability.
Each painting a snapshot of this vast panorama, and through multiple exposure of the same image over and over again, Lander exposes both this landscapes sensitivity and haunting beauty.
Jane Lander has an established practice of more than 30 years, working in painting, drawing, animation and printmaking. Her work is held in many collections including the Newcastle Art Gallery, Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, Maitland Art Gallery, Muswellbrook Art Gallery and Broken Hill Art Gallery.
Lander has been a finalist in many national prizes including The Dobell Drawing Prize, The Blake Traveling Art Prize, The NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting prize and The Kilgour Art Prize, now held annually at Newcastle Art Gallery. She was the recipient of The Windmill Trust Scholarship in 2010 and has been awarded numerous art prizes that include winning The Broken Hill Art Prize twice. Piopiotahi is Lander’s third solo exhibition with Curve Gallery and over her long career has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Newcastle.
