Vera Zulumovski – The Maximalists Garden

OPENING NIGHT:                  Friday 28th July   6pm

Exhibition:                          29th July- 12th August 2017

The motifs used in handicrafts and how these objects were made have reflected the values, customs and way of life of a society.

In this solo exhibition, The Maximalists Garden, Vera Zulumovski uses motifs which mirror her life and preoccupations within a contemporary context. She acknowledges her Macedonian heritage by imitating the style of traditional embroidering and weaving however, instead of needle and thread, she uses ultramodern felt brushes injected with ink. These intricately patterned drawings reflect the way we are shaped by the immeasurable influences of modern society.

Zulumovski finds eclectic stimuli utilising various incongruous elements, such as diagrams in physics textbooks, templates used by dressmakers or mathematicians, designs of public or domestic gardens and the influences of recent movements like Op Art and Maximalism.

Vera Zulumovski has exhibited widely and established a national reputation as a printmaker. Her work is in numerous prominent public gallery collections, a suite of work at NRAG and over a dozen pieces at the National Gallery of Australia, where her work has been included in major works on paper survey exhibitions.

Zulumovski has won several commissions, prizes and awards including the Fremantle Print Award, Sutherland Shire Biennial Art Prize and the Works on Paper Category of the Muswellbrook Art Prize. She has been a finalist in many art prizes most recently the Silkcut Print Award and The Blake Prize for Religious Art. She has also been awarded the Australia Council Studio in Barcelona and recently participated in a month long residency at Hill End.
