MICHAEL BELL:DOUBLE VISION
OPENING NIGHT: FRIDAY 3rd MARCH 6pm
EXHIBITION: 4-25 MARCH
DOUBLE VISION features more than 50 new works from Michael Bell, with new imagery revealing visions of mortality, the ocean at night and Newcastle’s famous The Obelisk. In his deliberately lively painting style Bell takes us into a lyrical world where narrative and image examine our place within landscape and consciousness.
Creating and exhibiting for over 35 years Michael Bell’s work is held in many collections including The Australian National Gallery Canberra, Newcastle Art Gallery, Maitland Regional Art Gallery and Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery.
Writing about Michael Bell’s work, art critic John McDonald has commented: “There is an element of Australian larrikinism in Bell’s work, a dislike of pompousness and pretension. He does not set out to shock his audience, but to amuse them and make them think. Like many of the best-known Australian modernists, he might ultimately be seen as an icon-maker.”
