Natural Rhythm brings two artists together for an exhibition that explores design, colour and forms of nature in opposing techniques. Whilst Vanessa works with traditional materials creating clusters of flora meticulously drawn with a fine brush, Michael embraces digital colour to achieve heightened familiar colour ways in his stylised landscapes.

Vanessa Lewis

Vanessa Lewis is an award winning artist, currently undertaking a PhD research project at the University of Newcastle, investigating the application of traditional materials and methods as a foundation for a sustainable contemporary art practice. In this current series of work Vanessa uses tempera and gold leaf on paper to respond to the use of theses mediums within the decorative arts revival of the early 20th Century. Her work is a conversation with an era when the lines between art, design and nature were blurred.

Vanessa is the current winner of ‘Fuel for Thought’ the Watt Space University gallery Open Prize and was the winner of the Newcastle Emerging Art Prize (2015) for works on paper. Vanessa is an emerging artist working with traditional materials to produce a very contemporary outcome.

Michael Langley

Michael Langley has a long history of working with glass and this influences his practice, using flawless colour to produce vibrant works on paper. He explores pattern and colour, heightening the experience of a remembered landscape and examining how this memory ‘sees’ landscape. Michael says, ‘I attempt to create work that lifts the spirit and takes the viewer to another place’.
