Mastering Mortality is Gavin Vitullo’s first Solo Exhibition and promises to be an insightful look into the mind of an artist who questions ones place within the environment through visual language and a multidisciplinary practice that includes printmaking, sculpture and drawing. This body of work has evolved over the past 5 years, both a challenging and rewarding time for the artist who has worked through grief, multiple surgeries and constant interruptions along the way that have influenced & inspired his path to this solo exhibition.

Playing with scale, Mastering Mortality will feature both monumental & intimate contemplative sculptures full of symbolic meaning, executed in various mediums including stone, timber and concrete. Forms that are scarred by evocative textural surfaces, prompt the viewer to consider more than the form alone.

Vitullo is most recognised for his work in sculpture and was the winner of the Newcastle Emerging Artist Prize for sculpture in both 2013 & 2014. He was also the inaugural Newcastle Lord Mayors Public Sculpture winner in 2013 for his work ‘Undercurrent’ and has been a finalist in the prestigious Gosford Art Prize for the last 3 years running for his work in both printmaking and sculpture, testifying to his exploration across many disciplines.
