WIND Shear, a solo exhibition by Joanna O’Toole featuring an immersive abstract installation that will defy gravity, as wire becomes birds in flight, swirling and dipping through the gallery space, accompanied by drawings and sculpture influenced by the installation.

Joanna’s three-dimensional practice combines line with form, essentially seeing each sculpture and installation as a drawing in space. Joanna’s work reflects nature, environment and the world that she sees and lives in. She visits personal memories and presents change, time and social play through her sculptures and installations.

This sculptural installation WIND Shear is her abstracted reflection of nature and movement expressed through drawing with wire. She says, “When all my thoughts and drawings are complete, materials in hand and ready to sculpt, I am in my element. There is nothing in the world that I enjoy more than wrestling with materials and pushing them to their limit to produce an elegant work.”

Joanna O’Toole is a prize winning contemporary sculptor with a background in printmaking and painting, completing a degree in Fine Arts and Design at RMIT University of Melbourne and more recently she studied Sculpture, completing an Advanced Diploma of Fine Art at Newcastle Art School. Joanna has been selected and has won several prizes for her sculpture, including Sculpture in the Vineyards Artist Residency Award, Ford Grant Scholarship and Gosford Art Prize Booth Sculpture Award.
